TalkingPoints, a non-profit focused on improving student outcomes by building effective partnerships between schools and families, faced growing challenges around integrating student data from districts. With the help of Ednition, a leader in edtech rostering and interoperability, TalkingPoints implemented a near real-time, scalable infrastructure to streamline rostering and attendance data. This shift allowed the team to focus on its core mission, accelerate product innovation, and initially support more than 25,000 schools and districts more effectively.
TalkingPoints was dependent on student information system (SIS) data, including rostering and attendance, to power its communication and family engagement platform. However, handling SIS integrations in-house was time-consuming and resource-intensive. The organization wanted to avoid building an entire infrastructure to ingest, normalize, and act on this data while maintaining its focus on its core mission.
“We knew we needed access to attendance and rostering data to support students more proactively, but we didn’t want to take focus from our core mission in building and maintaining data infrastructure ourselves, said Stephanie Kaufman, Head of Product at TalkingPoints. “With Ednition, we can focus on supporting educators and families to improve student outcomes and let edtech integration experts handle the hard parts.”
TalkingPoints partnered with Ednition to implement RosterStream, a flexible data integration platform built for K–12 education companies. RosterStream enabled TalkingPoints to:
The implementation process was fast – TalkingPoints stood up a working version in just 8 weeks. The data pipeline now fans data streams to two destinations: their application database (which powers product functionality) and their analytics platform (which supports product insights and district dashboards).
“If we had built this ourselves, it would have taken a year and pulled multiple engineers off our core product features. I don’t know if we would have delivered our attendance package in time for back-to-school,” said Heather Dooley, Senior Director of Brand Marketing & Communications at TalkingPoints. “Ednition helped us deliver something powerful in just eight weeks, and made it easier to better serve districts and students.”
With this foundation in place, TalkingPoints is now focused on expanding its attendance-based offerings to reach more districts, improving the scalability of rostering and attendance data ingestion, and helping educators act quickly and proactively to absence data to prevent chronic absenteeism becoming a problem. By continuing to integrate high-quality student data, the organization aims to drive even stronger outcomes for students and deepen family engagement across the country.
